Authorities reported on Friday that a 35-year-old man was charged with r*pe and assault after a woman was s*xually abused on board a public transportation train in Pennsylvania on Wednesday night. Passengers watched the crime but did not assist, authorities said.

At around 11 p.m., the woman was r*ped while taking the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority’s (SEPTA) Market-Frankford line to Upper Darby.

“A SEPTA employee witnessed the assault and phoned 911, allowing SEPTA officers to come swiftly and catch the perpetrator in the act,” said Andrew Busch, a SEPTA spokesperson.

According to Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt, SEPTA officers apprehended the suspect, who was eventually identified as Fiston Ngoy, 35.

According to Bernhardt of NBC Philadelphia, surveillance video captured the whole attack, providing detectives with enough evidence to charge Ngoy with r*pe and assault.

Investigators are also studying the footage in order to figure out who was present and interview any witnesses, according to Bernhardt.

Bernhardt told NBC Philadelphia that he spoke with the woman on Friday and that she was doing well after being rushed to the hospital for treatment of her injuries.

The investigation into the r*pe is still being led by Upper Darby police, with cooperation from SEPTA Transit Police. Authorities are also requesting anyone who observed the attack to contact them.

“She’s on the mend,” Bernhardt said. “Hopefully she will get through this.” The entire episode was captured on surveillance video that showed other people on the train at the time, Bernhardt said.
