Virginia McLaurin, a 100-year-old who enthusiastically danced with President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in 2016 at the White House, has passed away. Her age was 113. Felipe Cardoso Jr., McLaurin’s son, revealed on Tuesday that his mother passed away early on Monday at her home in Olney, Maryland.

“She lived an incredibly full life and appreciated all the love she received from people on this FB page and everywhere she went. (Before the pandemic that is — for the past few years she largely stayed inside.),” the post said.

Relationship

Virginia McLaurin had a son and a daughter with her late husband. At 87 years old, the daughter was still living, but her son had passed away. She thought she had roughly 50 live descendants despite this. She became a great great great grandma since at least one of her grandkids had a great-grandchild.

Virginia McLaurin ran a washing business in Silver Spring, Maryland, in addition to working as a seamstress and domestic worker for households. Since the early 1980s, McLaurin has served forty hours a week at Roots Public Charter School via AmeriCorps Seniors. In October 1994, she enrolled in the United Planning Organization’s Foster Grandparent Program.

Mayor Vincent C. Gray presented her with a volunteer community service award in 2013. Her residence was infested with bed bugs in 2014, and when a TV crew made the situation public, a nearby pest control business eliminated the problem and provided her with a free bed.

Obama Administration

Friends of McLaurin suggested that she meet with the President at the conclusion of the Obama administration because of her significant volunteer background to members of the Obama administration. In honor of Black History Month, the White House welcomed McLaurin in February 2016.

McLaurin hugged President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama and began dancing with them right away. Later, she would admit in interviews that she had never imagined she would live to see the White House and that she would never have imagined seeing a Black President and his Black wife while commemorating Black history. The video of her dancing with the Obamas went viral online shortly after she met them.

She has since been referred to as Grandma Virginia and D.C.’s favorite centenarian, according to the local press. For her two decades of assistance to schoolchildren, McLaurin was given the President’s Volunteer Service Award on March 11, 2016. She went to a Washington Nationals baseball game on May 27, 2016, and on the field, a personalized jersey was given to her.
