The passing of Sheriff Joe Sedinger has been verified by the Autauga County Sheriff’s Office.
The announcement was made Monday night on Facebook by the sheriff’s office. His death’s cause is yet to be known.
In November, Sedinger, who was initially elected in 2014, won re-election for a third term. He had spent over three decades in the sheriff’s office.
State law mandates that the county coroner, who is also an elected official, will temporarily serve as sheriff.
The well-liked lawmaker had recently been elected to a third term that would start on January 16. Early in December, Sedinger received a cancer diagnosis, and he immediately started a rigorous course of therapy. He never made the specific type of cancer known to the public.
Before being chosen as chief cop eight years ago, he spent more than 22 years working for the sheriff’s office and rising through the ranks. He covered all of his expenses for the police academy. He began his career as a “road” deputy on patrol and worked in all divisions with the exception of narcotics. Under the former sheriff Herbie Johnson, he rose through the ranks to become chief deputy, second in command.
Johnson backed Sedinger for sheriff when he left the position after 24 years.
“I hired Joe as a young deputy,” Johnson said, saying his death was a sad day for Autauga County and a sad day for law enforcement. “Joe was a good officer, one of the best I ever worked with. He could handle anything. But more important he was a good, good man. He had a fine family and he served Autauga County well. “I just hate this.”

It’s not obvious what will happen next. In accordance with state law, the county coroner, Buster Barber, serves as sheriff up until the governor appoints a replacement. Kay Ivey, the governor, might call a special election because the term has not yet formally started.
