The mother of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Heeraben Modi, passed away at the age of 99.
In the western state of Gujarat, where she resided, she had been admitted to the hospital after her health deteriorated.
“A glorious century rests at the feet of God,” Mr Modi tweeted. He was seen lighting his mother’s funeral pyre in Gandhinagar on Friday morning.
For her blessing on significant occasions and festivals, the Indian prime minister frequently paid his mother visits.
Heeraben turned 99 on June 18, and Mr. Modi said that Heeraben’s life and sacrifices “molded” his mind, personality, and sense of self.

Rajnath Singh, the defence minister, said that the news left him “very grieved.”

“The death of a mother leaves such a void in one’s life that is impossible to fill,” he wrote.
The former vice-president of India, M. Venkaiah Naidu, also offered his condolences.
Heeraben was born in 1923 in Visnagar, in the Mehsana district of Gujarat.
“Her childhood was one of poverty and deprivation,” Mr Modi wrote.
She married Damodardas Mulchand Modi when she was a teenager and relocated to the nearby town of Vadnagar
In Vadnagar, our family used to stay in a tiny house which did not even have a window, let alone a luxury like a toilet or a bathroom,” Mr Modi wrote in his blog.
He described his mother as punctual, neat and a hard worker. “While working, she would hum her favourite bhajans and hymns,” he wrote.
Heeraben never went to public events, Mr. Modi claimed, adding that she had only ever accompanied him to two occasions, the second of which was in 2001 when he first took the oath of office as Gujarat’s chief minister.
“Since then, she has never accompanied me to a single public event,” he wrote.
Even though he took office as prime minister of India in 2014, Heeraben only paid him a visit in Delhi in 2016. She was shown around Mr. Modi’s official residence in images he shared of himself.

Months later, when Mr. Modi’s administration controversially outlawed 500 and 1,000 rupee notes in an effort to combat hidden wealth, Heeraben was pictured visiting a bank to exchange old notes, just like millions of other Indians.

In Mehsana, Gujarat, Heeraben was born on June 18, 1922. At a young age, she wed Vadnagar tea vendor Damodardas Moolchand Modi.
Amrit Modi, Pankaj Modi, Narendra Modi, Prahlad Modi, Soma Modi, and Vasanti Ben Hansmukhlal Modi were their five sons.
