Murphy served as a volunteer for Save the Children after arriving in Delhi, assisting Tibetan refugees. She spent five months in a Dharamsala refugee camp maintained by Tsering Dolma, the 14th Dalai Lama’s sister. She then rode through the Kullu Valley, stopping at Malana for Christmas. Her journals from this time were collected and published in her second book, Tibetan Foothold.

Murphy made her first journey to Africa in 1966. She traveled to Ethiopia and walked from Asmara to Addis Abeba with a pack mule, encountering Kalashnikov-wielding soldiers along the way. In Ethiopia with a Mule, her fourth book describes this experience.

Murphy published A Place Apart in 1978, based on her travels in Northern Ireland and encounters with members of the Protestant and Catholic religious groups. Murphy, then 71, planned to bike through the Ussuriland region of eastern Russia in 2002. She returned to Siberia and published Silverland, a companion novel.
