Dervla Murphy, an Irish explorer and travel writer, died at the age of 90. Murphy was the best-selling author of several travel novels, including Full Tilt: Ireland to India on a Bicycle and Eight Feet in the Andes. For decades, she had written about her travels across the world (typically by bike).
President Michael D Higgins also paid his tribute to Murphy. Murphy’s publisher, Eland Publishing in London, said in a statement following her death that “the world of travel writing has lost its secular saint, who believed in truth above all.”

Dervla Murphy was 90 years old when she died. She was raised in Lismore, County Waterford. Her parents were originally from Dublin but had relocated to Lismore when her father was appointed county librarian.
Murphy’s mother developed rheumatoid arthritis when she was a year old, and she suffered from it for the rest of her life. They were advised not to have any more children, and Dervla grew up as an only child.

Murphy embarked on her first long-distance cycling tour, a self-supported journey from Ireland to India, in 1963. Murphy served as a volunteer for Save the Children after arriving in Delhi, assisting Tibetan refugees. She spent five months in a Dharamsala refugee camp maintained by Tsering Dolma, the 14th Dalai Lama’s sister. She then rode through the Kullu Valley, stopping at Malana for Christmas. Her journals from this time were collected and published in her second book, Tibetan Foothold.
Murphy made her first journey to Africa in 1966. She traveled to Ethiopia and walked from Asmara to Addis Abeba with a pack mule, encountering Kalashnikov-wielding soldiers along the way. In Ethiopia with a Mule, her fourth book describes this experience.
Murphy published A Place Apart in 1978, based on her travels in Northern Ireland and encounters with members of the Protestant and Catholic religious groups. It was awarded the Christopher Ewart-Biggs Memorial Prize in 1979. Does she consider her 1982 book Race to the Finish? The Nuclear Stakes to be a watershed moment in her career, prompting her to write more about political issues.
Murphy, then 71, planned to bike through the Ussuriland region of eastern Russia in 2002. She tore a calf muscle while recuperating at Lake Baikal after breaking her knee on the Baikal Amur Mainline railway, and her intentions changed to a voyage around Siberia by train, boat, and bus, which she recorded in Through Siberia by Accident. She returned to Siberia and published Silverland, a companion novel.
