‘the Goose,’ a former NFL DT, passes away at age 55.

Tony Siragusa, an NFL defensive tackle who rose to prominence as one of the sport’s most prominent figures, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 55.

It was not immediately known what caused Siragusa’s passing.

The Baltimore Ravens’ legendary 2000 defense, led by Siragusa, affectionately nicknamed “Goose,” was a key component of the team’s first Super Bowl victory that year. As an undrafted free agent who began his 12-year career by drinking away his $1,000 signing bonus, he left the sport as one of its distinctive characters, well-known for his irreverent sense of humor and unforgettable practical jokes.

“There was no one like Goose — a warrior on the field and a team unifier with a giving, generous heart who helped teammates and the community more than most people know,” former Ravens coach Brian Billick said. “We would not have won the Super Bowl without him. This is such stunning, sad news, and our hearts go out to Kathy and the Siragusa family.”

Siragusa played with the Indianapolis Colts for the first seven seasons of his career before signing with the Ravens as a free agent in 1997. Jim Irsay, the owner of the Colts, wrote on Twitter that he and Colts Nation were both “heartbroken.” In a subsequent tweet, Irsay continued, “The Goose packed 200 fun-loving years into 55!!

Siragusa, a blue-collar run-stuffer, experienced his pinnacle play on a quarterback hit. Siragusa dislocated Rich Gannon’s left shoulder and drove the Oakland Raiders quarterback into the ground during the 2000 AFC Championship Game. The Ravens then defeated the Raiders 16-3 to win the game and move on to the Super Bowl.

Knee Surgeries

Even though it resulted in numerous knee surgeries and no invitations to the Pro Bowl, Siragusa was content with carrying out the grunt work for one of the NFL’s top defenses. He even enjoyed the attention off the field. A 6-foot-3, 340-pound wall in the middle for Baltimore, Siragusa helped the team set league records for the fewest points (165) and rushing yards (970) in a 16-game season. He also occupied double teams to free up space for middle linebacker Ray Lewis.

“This is a tough one,” Lewis said. “I love Goose like a brother. From the first day we met, I knew that life was different. I knew he was someone who would change my life forever. He was a one-of-a-kind person who made you feel important and special. You can never replace a man like that.”

Said kicker Matt Stover: “I truly believe that the Super Bowl XXXV team would have never been as good as it was without Tony. He not only plugged up the middle, but his locker room presence created a loose environment when things were tight. He will be missed, but not forgotten.”
