Bishop High School Girls Basketball Coach, Terry English, dies at 72

Terry English who was the legendary girls’ basketball coach of Bishop Miege High School in Roeland Park and led the team to 22 state titles, has died. According to the verified reports, He has suffered a stroke and died on Tuesday. When he died, He was 72 years old. He served as Miege’s Basketball Coach for more than 40 years and won a lot of victories with the team.

Terry English Career as Girls Basketball Coach

Terry English graduated from Bishop Miege in the Year 1968, and his four children named Mark, Greg, Jeff, and Jenny also attended the same school, too. But his partner’s name is still unknown to us.

Talking about his successful career, His coaching career began in the Year 1975 when the girls’ basketball team was first formed at a private Catholic school. Over the next nearly half-century, Terry led the team to 22 state titles and also a career record of 910-168.

Just a year ago in 2021, English was named the 2020-21 MaxPreps National Coach of the Year as he won the state-level basketball titles with his School team.

After the Year 2021, English soon announced his retirement, ending his 45-year career as a basketball coach. His son Jeff, who served as an assistant coach to his father for more than 15 years, was named as new head coach last year. In August, his son, Jeff announced he was stepping down to pursue another opportunity, and Terry came back on board to be Stags’ head coach once again for the next upcoming season.

Former players, students, athletes, and the basketball community took to social media soon after the school’s announcement to remember Terry English after his death.

English’s one of his students wrote on Twitter saying, “A good coach can change a game. A great coach can change a life”. Terry English was loved by so many and helped make me the player and person I am today. He was also a pure soul taken from this world too soon, but may he rest in peace knowing his legacy will live on forever!

And also his former Student Nkurt also wrote on Twitter Saying, “We lost a legend today. Terry English’s mark on girls’ basketball in Kansas and the Miege community cannot be overstated. His 22-state titles only tell a small part of the story. My girls are better people and players because of him. Prayers for the English family”.

Many other well-wishers reacted to Terry English’s death saying that, He was a legendary coach and he achieved many more titles with Bishop Miege School Basketball.
