New Zealand Aquathlete and triathlete, Shane Reed, dies at 49

Aquathlete and triathlete Shane Reed was from New Zealand. The ITU Aquathlon World Championships saw him claim three victories. He competed in over 65 ITU events throughout his athletic career, finishing in the top 10 in 31 of them and earning five medals.

At the age of 21, Reed took part in his first triathlon. In Madeira, Portugal, in the 2004 ITU World Triathlon Championships, he came in seventh. In Gamagori, Japan, he finished eleventh at the 2005 ITU World Triathlon Championships.

At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Reed represented New Zealand and assisted teammate Bevan Docherty in winning a bronze medal.

He also captured three World Aquathlon titles, two ITU (previously World Triathlon) World Cup victories, and a number of additional podium finishes.

“It is with profound sadness that Triathlon New Zealand acknowledges the passing of Shane Reed, Olympian #1079,” the national body said in a statement.

“Among the tributes flowing in from around the globe, Shane is remembered as “one of the good guys”, a quiet and humble achiever at the highest echelons of our sport.

“Our thoughts and condolences are with Shane’s family and friends at this time.”

Tribute

World Triathlon, the sport’s international governing body, also paid tribute to Reed by posting a video of his accomplishments and a message on their website.

“World Triathlon would like to express its deepest sadness for the loss of New Zealand Olympian Shane Reed. This devastating news has shattered the Triathlon and Multisport community.

“Shane, a quiet achiever, has had multiple sporting achievements to his name over the years…

He anticipated finishing in the top ten with his teammates, but due to fatigue from riding the bike, he was unable to keep up his pace. Reed’s disappointment at not being able to compete in his own race was compounded by the fact that his brother Matt narrowly defeated him and came in at a good thirty-second. He ultimately finished the race just two places behind his brother, clocking in at 1:52:48.
