Sebastian Kalinowski: Mother and partner guilty of murdering teenage son
Agnieszka Kalinowska, 35, and Andrzej Latoszewski, 38, tortured the kid for months before he died in Huddersfield in August 2021. Sebastian was beaten with a bed slat, whipped with an extension cord, and stabbed with a needle, jurors heard. The couple had denied murder but were convicted guilty after a six-week trial at Leeds Crown Court.
Sebastian died in hospital on 13 August of an illness caused by “untreated consequences of multiple rib fractures”, after weeks of what prosecutors described as “cruel assaults and maltreatment”. The teenager arrived in the UK from Poland in October 2020 to live with his mother and her long-term partner, the court heard. However, the arrangement swiftly turned sour, with one family member telling jurors they believed the couple started to consider him as a “hindrance”.
Over the following months, the teenager was routinely beaten by the duo and given brutal and humiliating punishments whenever they thought he had misbehaved. The pair themselves described their conduct in text conversations with each other as “torture”.
‘Horrifying footage’
CCTV footage collected from a camera system built by Latoszewski to spy on Sebastian captured the incident. In one 30-minute tape given to the jury, he is seen pounding the youngster more than 100 times, pausing at one moment to wipe the sweat from his face, while Kalinowska watched TV and ate toast. On the day before Sebastian’s death, Latoszewski was seen on CCTV forcing food and drink into the boy’s mouth and stabbing him a number of times with a needle in the groin and thigh.
Prosecutors stated he was “obviously chuckling when he did so” before Kalinowska took over stabbing the youngster with the needle. Sebastian was also verbally abused by the pair and instructed to address Latozsewski as Mr or Sir. The court heard that on the day he died Latoszewski waited more than two hours after discovering him unconscious before calling for an ambulance. He then claimed Sebastian had drowned in the bath and that his injuries had been the consequence of a fall from a tree or a struggle.
The jury took about three hours and 39 minutes before returning unanimous convictions against both defendants. After the judgments were given Kalinowska began crying in the dock. Daniel Lee from the Crown Prosecution Service said it was “difficult to imagine the misery and fear this young boy faced, inflicted in his own house, by his claimed caregivers”. Adjourning punishment until October at the earliest, Mrs. Justice Lambert said the jury’s attention to the case had been “really outstanding”.
“You have had to witness rather horrible footage of Sebastian suffering immense anguish over a long length of time and ultimately his death,” she remarked. “I take the opinion, and I don’t believe there’ll be anyone in this court who would disagree, you have gone beyond the call of duty. Therefore I take this action of discharging you from all jury service in the future.” Det Ch Insp Tony Nicholson, who oversaw the investigation, said the jury had sat through some “quite traumatic evidence in what has been a lengthy and challenging legal procedure”.
“Detectives and partners in the CPS firmly feel that the charge of murder fully reflected the physical violence Latoszewski and Kalinowska perpetrated on Sebastian, and we are happy they have been found guilty of this act,” he said. “We await their sentencing and our prayers are with Sebastian’s families in Poland.”

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, welcomed the verdict and said it was a “very unpleasant and absolutely awful” case of abuse. “I will never understand how someone could treat any child, much alone their own, with such disgusting cruelty and contempt,” she added. Helen Westerman, from the NSPCC, said Sebastian’s mother and her partner were the “the people who should have been nurturing him”. “People will be asking how any youngster in our culture could experience such a horrific campaign of abuse without anyone acting.
“That is why it is so vital that no stone is left unturned in the review looking at the circumstances of his death,” she said. A spokesman for Kirklees Safeguarding Children Partnership said a review of the case has been commissioned, adding that “the outcome will be communicated in as timely a manner as feasible”.
