In the age of 16, Melrose competed in his debut race at Scotland’s Knockhill in March 2014. He competed in his maiden away race for the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch in October 2014. The youngest driver to accomplish this, he managed to advance to the festival’s final and finished in the top 20. Because of this success and his professional demeanor outside of the car, he received the SMRC Rising Star Award for Formula Ford 1600.

Melrose previously competed in the Formula Ford 1600 series for the Graham Brunton Racing team, where he finished his second season in fifth place overall with 140 points.

He came in third place in 2016 and was named the SMRC’s Best Young Single-Seater Driver.
