Littlefeather was the first Native American lady to ever accept an Oscar when Brando won the best actor for The Godfather in 1973 while wearing a buckskin dress and moccasins.

She gave a 60-second speech in which she said that Brando was unable to receive the honor because of “how the film business currently treats American Indians.” and now the Academy apologizes for the serious abuse she suffered for speaking on behalf of Brando for nearly 50 years ago.

She was raised in Santa Barbara, California, by her mother Geraldine Marie Barnitz, a leather stamper of French, German, and Dutch ancestry. Her father, Manuel Ybarra Cruz, was of White Mountain Apache and Yaqui ancestry and was born in Oxnard, California.

Manuel and Geraldine were both saddle manufacturers. Saddlery, after her father passed away in 1966, her mother kept the company running. When she was 4 years old, her mother moved her to live with her maternal grandparents after leaving her father. He claimed that her parents and her maternal grandparents shared a home and that she and her two younger sisters also resided there.

Littlefeather obtained a number of radio and television commercial credits while pursuing her dream of becoming an actress, and she also joined the Screen Actors Guild. She received the title of Miss Vampire USA in 1970 as “Sacheen Littlefeather of Alcatraz” as part of a campaign for Dark Shadows.

Early in the 1970s, while residing in the San Francisco Bay region, Littlefeather took part in the Foothill College American Indian Festival in 1971, served as “Princess Littlefeather” in a local beauty pageant in 1972, and planned an American Indian Festival at the Palace of Fine Arts in 1972. She also spent around six months working for KFRC, a radio station, and provided independent reporting for Channel 9.

She was recognized as a professional model when she made an appearance in “Make-up for Minority Women” in January 1973. In February 1973, she spoke out against President Nixon’s budget cuts to federal Indian programs on behalf of the National American Indian Council. She took part in a discussion about minority representation on television involving representatives from different minority groups and the Federal Communications Commission.

She claimed that she had assisted in sending two Indian nurses to Wounded Knee in an interview that was published soon before her Academy Awards appearance and that she had also given up her citizenship along with seven other Native Americans. Sacheen was given the Brando Award by the Red Nation International Film Festival in November 2019, which honors people for their services to the American Indian community.

She took part in ceremonies honoring the 50th anniversary of the Alcatraz Invasion, acting as head pow wow judge among other things.
