Len Johnrose, a former football player, passes away at age 52 after battling MND.

In 2017, Johnrose received a diagnosis of motor neuron disease (MND), a condition that damages the brain and nerves and has no known treatment.

More than 200 of his 502 career games were played with Bury, and he also spent time at Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End, Hartlepool, and Swansea City.

Preston, the team from his birthplace, expressed their “sadness” at hearing of his loss.

Johnrose spent time on loan at Preston North End before beginning his professional career as a young trainee at Blackburn Rovers. He made an impression during these periods to the point where Hartlepool United decided to purchase him for Β£50,000.

He later made more than fifty appearances for the team and netted eleven goals. When his contract expired, Bury manager Stan Ternent decided to sign him because he wanted to give his central midfield more toughness.

Johnrose had a major role in Bury’s quick ascent to the First Division. Ternent valued the midfielder so highly for his teams that he paid Β£225,000 to sign Johnrose to a new contract with Burnley. He was released on a free transfer at the conclusion of the 2002–03 campaign but returned to the team four months later on a week-to-week deal.

Later, he re-signed with Bury, one of his former clubs. He relocated once more after three months, this time to Swansea City.

Johnrose accepted Swansea’s offer of a 12-month contract in the summer of 2003, and he began the 2003–2004 campaign playing center-half, which was a position he had never played before. Johnrose briefly served as captain before returning to his more comfortable position as a defensive central midfielder after hamstring surgery.

A second 12-month contract extension was planned around Christmas 2003, but when manager Brian Flynn left the Swans within two days of their mutual agreement to part ways in March 2004, Johnrose had his contract paid in full.

On the final day of transfers, Johnrose made his third signing for Burnley (March 2004).
