Eminent Odia litterateur Rajat Kumar Kar dies at age 88

Rajat Kumar Kar, a Padma Shri recipient, died on Sunday in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, according to his family. They said he was 88 years old and had heart problems.

Kar complained of chest trouble around 5 p.m., and physicians confirmed him dead when he arrived at the hospital, they added. Kar’s death was mourned by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who said his contribution to Odia culture would be remembered.

Patnaik stated that he will be laid to rest with full state honors.

Kar was OK until midday when he went to rest after lunch. They claimed that he complained of uneasiness shortly after getting out of bed and was sent to the hospital as a result.

Kar, who was awarded the Padma Shri in 2021 for his contributions to literature and education, was suffering from heart problems and was taking medication.

He was noted for his commentary on TV and radio during the yearly Ratha Jatra for six decades as a Jagannath orator.

He also played a key role in the resurrection of Odisha’s fading art form, Pala, and was a prolific writer on Upendra Bhanja literature, having published seven non-fiction works. He’s also the author of a few words about Lord Jagannath.

Kar’s death was mourned by many people, including OPCC President Niranjan Patnaik, State BJP President Samir Mohanty, and others.
