The first Mexican American brewery owner in Portland, Nick Herrera, passed away at age 45. His partner Angel Medina, who made the announcement, said he died of liver and kidney failure. Nick Herrera, the very first Mexican American, was born in 1977 and was reared in California by parents who had fled Mexico as young children. He was 45 years old. His mother worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in the Central Valley of California, and his father is a former police officer.
Before beginning his career in the San Diego brewing industry, he spent ten years working in biotech. He relocated to Oregon in 2018 to be closer to his family, and when he did, he brought his background and a thirst for knowledge to the North Portland brewery Laboratory, which is now closed. Herrera started working at Multnomah Athletic Club as a procurement manager.
He first addressed this objective with Medina, who had relocated from Portland back to Mexico City in 2019, but he nonetheless had aspirations of starting his own brewery. According to Medina, the creator of Portland’s Repblica Hospitality Group, “Nick was a brother to me, not only to me but to many people.” He was simply a brilliant man whose life was taken from him far too soon. Medina claimed that Herrera had been struggling with alcoholism and had recently tried to quit.
