Nick’s Career as a Tennis Coach
Bollettieri was the tennis director at the Dorado Beach Hotel in Puerto Rico in the late 1960s when it was a Rockefeller resort, despite the fact that he had just dabbled in tennis in high school. Julio Moros, who had joined Bollettieri when he established his school in Florida, served as his primary assistant coach there.
In 1977, Bollettieri relocated to Longboat Key, Florida, where he worked as tennis coach at the Colony Beach and Tennis Resort. The Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy (NBTA) was established by Bollettieri in 1978 on 40 acres in unincorporated Manatee County on Florida’s west coast, roughly 50 miles south of Tampa.
The first significant tennis boarding school, NBTA, revolutionized junior elite tennis instruction. International Management Group (IMG), seeing a model for other sports, purchased the school from Bollettieri in 1987; yet, Bollettieri remained to oversee and play a crucial role in the growth of the tennis academy and related programs.
Top-tier athletes were trained by Bollettieri during his last year at the school, where he mostly resided in Bradenton, Florida. Bollettieri was featured in various documentaries and television shows, including Jason Kohn’s Love Means Zero, which had its world debut on September 9 at the 42nd Toronto International Film Festival.
