Illinois Republican tells Trump rally that Roe verdict a ‘victory for white life’

At a rally with former President Donald Trump, Illinois Republican Mary Miller declared to the crowd that the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade was a “win for white life.”

She addressed the president, to loud applause in Illinois, saying, “President Trump, on behalf of all the Maga patriots in America, I want to congratulate you for the historic victory for white life in the highest court yesterday.”

With the former president’s support, Miller is vying for reelection in the state’s newly redistricted 15th congressional district against GOP Republican Rodney Davis. Trump, who attended the rally in Mendon, Illinois, to encourage voters to come out for the state’s primary on Tuesday, had invited her to speak on stage.

According to Miller’s spokeswoman, the Illinois Republican meant to suggest that the judgment represented a triumph for the “right to life”. The way the statement was said didn’t match the disparate impact that women of color will experience as a result of the revocation of abortion rights.

It was “a mix-up of words,” Miller spokesperson Isaiah Wartman told the Associated Press.

Great Replacement Theory

Saturday’s rally came as some elements of the far-right have pushed the “great replacement theory”, a racist ideology that alleges white people and their influence are being “replaced” by people of color. Proponents blame both immigration as well as demographic changes, such as birth rates.

During the rally, Trump claimed credit for his role in the supreme court’s ruling on Friday ending the constitutional right to abortion. He noted that in 2016, he promised to appoint judges who opposed abortion rights. The three conservative justices he appointed all voted in favor of overturning Roe v Wade.

“Yesterday the court handed down a victory for the constitution, a victory for the rule of law, and above all, a victory for life,” he told the crowd, which broke into a chant of “Thank you, Trump”.

Several senators who recently authorized the justices who made this decision stated they felt tricked after Friday’s ruling. These lawmakers cited earlier claims made by Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, two male justices who were appointed by Trump, that they would not overturn Roe v. Wade.
