John Engen, Missoula’s longest-serving mayor, died Monday of pancreatic cancer, municipal authorities said. He was 57. After winning his fifth term in November 2021, Engen stated in March that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and had a tumor on his liver. His death was confirmed in a news release by city spokesman Ginny Merriam.
Gwen Jones, head of the city council, has been appointed interim mayor until a new mayor can be chosen, Merriam said. Engen led with humor, strength, and grace, Jones told the Missoulian. He was “a great mayor who moved this community ahead and developed into a city,” Jones added. “The creative, lovely Missoula that we all know and love.”

He revealed his insurance had paid all but $3,200 of the operation costs but contradicted critics by saying his surgery would “not contribute to anyone’s tax bill. ” In October 2016, Engen took a month off work to undergo a recovery program for alcohol addiction.
