Klaus Schulze, an electronic music composer, died at the age of 74.

Schulze died on Tuesday, April 26th, according to a statement. His death was described as “sudden” by Frank Uhle, the managing director of his record company, SPV. He had been suffering from an unidentified ailment.

The cause of death is not clear yet.

Frank Uhle, managing director of Schulze’s label SVP, wrote: “We lose and will miss a good personal friend-one of the most influential and important composers of electronic music – a man of conviction and an exceptional artist. Our thoughts in this hour are with his wife, sons, and family. He’s always cheerful nature, his innovative spirit and his impressive body of work remain indelibly rooted in our memories.”

Schulze is survived by his wife, two sons, and four grandchildren.

Klaus Schulze was a German electronic music pioneer, composer, and musician. In 1969, Schulze was the drummer of one of the early incarnations of Tangerine Dream for their debut album Electronic Meditation. Before 1969 he was a drummer in a band called Psy Free. He met Edgar Froese from Tangerine Dream in the Zodiac Club in what was then West Berlin. In 1970 he left this group to form Ash Ra Tempel with Manuel Göttsching and Hartmut Enke.

Schulze began incorporating digital instruments in addition to analog synthesizers in the 1980s, and his work grew less experimental and more accessible as a result. Although the transition to digital technology is noticeable in the sound of Dig It (1980), the shift in style was not apparent until the release of Trancefer (1981).

Schulze’s “sample” period began with Beyond Recall when he incorporated a wide range of prerecorded sounds in his studio albums and live performances, including shrieking birds and sensual feminine moans.

He began re-releasing his iconic solo and Wahnfried albums in 2005, with bonus tracks of previously unreleased material recorded around the same time as the original works. Schulze has collaborated with Lisa Gerrard on a number of albums and live performances in recent years.

With the release of his fortieth album (Big in Japan: Live in Tokyo 2010) in September 2010, Klaus Schulze entered his fifth decade as a solo musician. His next album, Shadowlands, was released in February 2013, quickly to be followed by the release of The Schulze–Schickert Session 1975, a rare long-unreleased collaboration, in March 2013.
