Jeffery Dale Trevino, a convicted murderer, appeared in his orange jail jumpsuit before a judge in St. Paul on Monday and calmly learned his fate: 27 1/2 years in prison for the death of his wife, Kira Steger.

Before passing sentence, Ramsey County District Judge Leonardo Castro informed Trevino, “It is my belief on some level that you probably did not set out to kill Ms. Steger.”

Trevino’s treatment of Steger’s body, however, was “dishonorable, wicked, and malevolent,” according to the judge, who placed it in the trunk of her car and then dropped it into the freezing February waters of the Mississippi River.

Trevino, 39, was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder by a Ramsey County jury on Oct. 2. He was found not guilty of murdering someone on purpose.

Juror Kate Saumur, who was present at the sentencing, said the jury swiftly decided that Trevino killed his wife and not someone else, as the defense implied. The focus of the second day of deliberations was on whether or not the murder was premeditated.

“In actuality, we all agreed there was some intentionality,” she added, “but I don’t think most people believed it rose to (beyond a) reasonable doubt.”

She stated that they agreed with the prosecution’s theory that Steger was suffocated.

Trevino received credit for 273 days served in custody and was forced to pay $17,391 in restitution as part of his sentence.

When asked whether he had anything to say, Trevino replied, “I don’t think there is anything to say.”

The Kira Steger case from nearly four years ago is the subject of the Investigation Discovery channel’s one-hour broadcast “Ice Cold Killers” this week.

The two went on a “date night” on Feb. 21 at the Mall of America, where Steger ran Delia’s clothes store. They ate dinner and then went bowling.

Trevino informed police that after they returned to their home in the 500 block of East Iowa Avenue in St. Paul, they watched a movie and fell asleep.

At 11:44 p.m., Steger texted her boyfriend. She hadn’t been heard from since then.

Trevino said police he left the residence just after 2 a.m. on Feb. 22 to put gas in Steger’s Chevrolet Cobalt. Instead of turning east, which would have been the most direct path back to the residence, the car is seen on surveillance video heading west, near the Larpenteur Avenue/Interstate 35E interchange.

Prosecutors claimed Trevino was delivering a dreadful message: he had Steger’s body in the trunk of his Cobalt and was driving toward the Mississippi River to dispose of it.

Steger got up the next morning, Feb. 22, according to Trevino, and left to go to the gym and run errands.

At 9:14 a.m. that day, a neighbor’s surveillance camera captured photos of the Cobalt driving down the street. At 9:46 a.m., it landed at the Mall of America. A taxi van exited the mall at 9:58 a.m. It made its way to the Trevino residence.

 Prosecutors said Trevino got out of the house approximately a half-block away. A residence number that did not exist had been given to the cabbie.

Steger was supposed to work at Delia’s on February 23, but he didn’t show up. It was unheard of for her to be absent, according to coworkers. They grew extremely concerned.

At the mall, Trevino spoke with a Bloomington police officer who advised him to wait another day before reporting Steger missing. At trial, the officer testified that he had no idea Steger had been gone for more than a few hours.

Trevino contacted St. Paul police the next day, February 24. For the first time, he informed Steger’s family, beginning the call with her mother by asking, “Are you sitting down?”

Steger’s abandoned Cobalt was located in a Mall of America parking ramp on Feb. 25 by a mall security guard. The trunk was dripping with Steger’s blood. A bloodied trunk liner was discovered near the automobile on a short hill.

Because danger often follows drugs and drug traffickers, Conard, the defense attorney, contended that Steger’s infrequent marijuana usage may have played a role in her death.

 However, prosecutor Richard Dusterhoft stated that this did not match the evidence.

If a “random robber” killed Steger, Dusterhoft said it would make no sense for her car to end up at the mall. In the bedroom, there would have been no blood.

A pillow containing Steger’s blood was discovered near Keller Lake in Maplewood, according to the prosecutor, adding to Trevino’s guilt.

On Feb. 24, while being interviewed by police at the house, Trevino asked them — twice — what he should do with Steger’s items. The couple had given notice to vacate their rental home, but their move date was set for April 1, which was five weeks away.

Following the hearing, prosecutors and family members expressed their happiness with the sentencing.

“I think an appeal is likely,” Conard said, pending Trevino’s consent.
