A woman, Juliana Castrillon who spent four days lost in a dense Far North Queensland jungle has said she had been “preparing to die” before being recovered by emergency workers.

A 36-year-old Colombian national lost in isolated Queensland rainforest for five days without supplies was recovered alive by members of the public, police said. Juliana Castrillon has located on Wednesday afternoon about 1km from the lightly designated track she was trekking south of Cooktown. Castrillon – who has lived in Australia for a decade – was observed on Saturday morning starting off alone on the 14km trip from Cedar Bay to Home Rule after attending an unofficial rainforest party.

She was reported missing on Sunday and officials performed two days of overhead searches before police and the SES began a ground search on Wednesday. Queensland police claimed crocodiles, venomous snakes, deep ravines and hazardous streams were all “concerns in relation to survivability”.

Sources say two men located Castrillon on Wednesday afternoon and called SES workers who helped take the group out of the rainforest. A police official stated the 36-year-old was weak but otherwise in good health and unhurt. She was located about 1km off the lightly designated track by Granite Creek, they added. Castrillon had spent many days in Cedar Bay with local residents, travelers, and others who had attended the neighboring spiritual electronic music festival Orin Aya on the weekend of 3-4 September.

Family and friends had harbored severe anxieties about Castrillon when she failed to arrive at her destination of Home Rule on Saturday evening. They claimed she was reliable, responsible, and motivated to return to Byron Bay by Monday to establish her shop Byron Bay Traders.
