A guy called Paul Reynolds contacted the authorities five days after the murder and said that his roommate, David Shepard, said he had killed someone in Lubbock.

Reynolds claimed he conducted an online search, obtained data surrounding Sonnier’s passing, and suspected Sonnier might have been Shepard’s victim. Later, when police interrogated Shepard, he said his friend Thomas Michael Dixon had offered him a box of costly Cuban cigars and three silver bars in exchange for killing Sonnier. Moreover, the pawn shot records also proved that the silver bars were cashed by Shepard the day following the murder.

Officers arrested Dixon for the suspected murder on July 16, 2012. But, his first trial began in 2014, when David was brought to stand trial. He had already offered a confessional and agreed to take a plea deal and testify to avoid the death penalty. However, he shocks everyone on the stand when he reveals that Dixon was not engaged in the murder and he was the one who carried it out.
