Johnny Egan, a star in Connecticut high school basketball who was one of the state’s most exciting players in the 1950s, passed away on Thursday in Houston.

The native of Hartford played in the NBA for 11 seasons before relocating to Houston, where he concluded his playing career in 1972 and later served as the Rockets’ head coach.

“He touched so many lives,” John Egan Jr. told the Houston Chronicle Thursday. “He lived a big life. We’ve been hearing all day from friends and teammates since high school. He meant a lot to a lot of people.”

Egan, a two-time Class A MVP in the New Haven Register, excelled at Providence College before playing for six NBA clubs between 1961 and 1972. He was a 5-foot-11 guard who played for Detroit, the Knicks, Baltimore, the Lakers, Cleveland, San Diego, and Houston, averaging 7.8 points per game.

From 1972 to 1976, he served as the Rockets’ head coach. On January 18, 1975, he watched Houston play the Celtics in a regular-season game at the Hartford Civic Center.

The mayor of Hartford declared it “Johnny Egan Day,” marking the return of one of the city’s most energetic athletes.

Egan learned how to play basketball in Keney Park while growing up in Hartford’s North End. He would go on to become a standout at Weaver, helping his team win the 1957 New England title with 36 points in front of 11,071 spectators at the Boston Garden against Lawrence (Mass.) Central Catholic.
