He then played for the rest of the 1973 season with the St. Louis Cardinals.

He was later acquired by the Detroit Tigers from the Cardinals in December 1973, and from 1974 to 1983, he played for the team for ten seasons, first as a backup catcher and then as a utility player, filling in at the first base, designated hitter, outfield, third base, and pinch hitter. Wockenfuss spent two seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies after being moved there in 1984, primarily playing first base, catcher, and shortstop.

He played for the Albany-Colonie Diamond Dogs for two seasons, the Detroit Tigers farm system for four years, and the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system for two years. In 1993, he was admitted to the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame.
