John Carew, a former striker for Aston Villa, received a 14-month prison term after pleading guilty to tax evasion charges in his native Norway.

The 43-year-old acknowledged hiding assets and taxable income totaling around £26.7 million between 2014 and 2019. Carew said that since he resided overseas, he believed he did not have to pay taxes there. However, the prosecution presented proof that he spent more than 183 days annually in Norway during that period, making him liable for tax. In addition to the prison term, he also had to pay a £46,000 fine.

Carew admitted to the jury that he had been acting on his former agent’s recommendations. The court found that he behaved negligently but not intentionally, according to his attorney Berit Reiss-Andersen. We’ve been arguing over this from the beginning, and Carew made it obvious that he wanted to clarify things.

Carew would carefully review the judgment before determining whether to appeal, Reiss-Andersen said. Nearly 500 games were played by the former striker throughout his career, which spanned nine teams and included Valencia, Roma, Lyon, Stoke, and West Ham. He retired in 2012. Additionally, he scored 24 goals in 91 matches for Norway at the international level.
