The French referee Johan Hamel died at the young age of 42 after suffering a stroke at training. The experienced referee’s last game was in the middle between Lille and Rennes on November 6.
Hamel sent off Birger Meling in the 90th minute during the league fixture at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

The statement from the Union of Elite Football Referees (SAFE) has also read: “Arbitration is in mourning. We learn of the death of our colleague and friend, Johan Hamel, Ligue 1 referee, at the age of 42. “To his family, relatives, and friends, the SAFE and the Arbitrators send their deepest condolences. Johan, we will miss you.”
FIFA referee chief Pierluigi Collina has also said:
“The refereeing world and all match officials here at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar are united in grief over the unexpected passing of our colleague and friend Johan Hamel. We have held collectively send our heartfelt condolences to Johan’s family, relatives, and friends.”
Tributes have started to pour in for Hamel following the news of his passing with Saint-Etienne, Lille, and Paris Saint-Germain which is among the clubs to send their condolences to his friends and family.
Saint-Etienne has also said on Twitter in a statement:
“ASSE has just learned with great sadness of the sudden death of Johan Hamel, professional referee, at the age of 42. “The club sends all its thoughts to its loved ones and all of its bereaved colleagues.”
Lille has also written:
“LOSC learned with horror of the death of Johan Hamel. “The club and its president join the French football family by sending him all their thoughts and by expressing their sincere condolences to the relatives of the French referee.”
And French champions PSG has also said:
“Paris Saint-Germain sends all its thoughts to the family and loved ones of Johan Hamel as well as to the entire French referee.”

Johan was happily married to his lovely wife Sara Maria Elisabeth Herman in Amsterdam, North Holland, the Netherlands, on July 20, 1982. They had around four sons and five daughters.
