Royal Oak’s 44th District Court Judge, Jamie Wittenberg, dies at 48

According to his family, 48-year-old Jamie Wittenberg, a district court judge in Royal Oak with strong ties to Oakland County, passed away on Sunday after a three-year struggle with brain cancer.

Wittenberg, a native of Huntington Woods and a longtime resident of Berkley, was recently reelected to the court for a third term as a judge on the 44th District Court, where he had no opposition. Soon after the election, he was admitted to the hospital.

According to his wife Staci Wittenberg, he had his third brain surgery in August.

“He was generally regarded as one of the best-tempered, most well-liked judges in Oakland County, if not the state of Michigan,” said 44th District Court Judge Derek Meinecke on Sunday. Wittenberg doubled the size of sobriety court and helped found a teen court, a diversion program aimed at keeping juveniles out of the court system, Meinecke said.

“He was exactly the type of person that we should have with a robe on and on the bench,” Meinecke said.

Gretchen Whitmer will appoint someone to fill his job, according to Meinecke.

Assistant Prosecutor

Wittenberg was one of the youngest judges in Oakland County and the state when he was first elected in 2008, according to his wife. In the counties of Macomb and Wayne, he also served as an assistant prosecutor.

Before earning his law degree from Wayne State University, Wittenberg studied at Indiana University and twice won the Leonard R. Gilman scholarship.

Friends, colleagues, government officials, and community groups paid tribute to Wittenberg on social media Sunday.

“We are saddened to hear of the passing of Royal Oak District Court Judge Jamie Wittenberg. He was a respected jurist who represented his community with dignity and grace,” said Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel on Facebook.

“Judge Wittenberg was a Berkley resident and a fixture in both of our communities. He will be sorely missed. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers,” the Royal Oak Police Department posted on Facebook on Sunday evening.
