Hugh and Pearl McElhenny welcomed their son Hugh Edward McElhenny Jr. on July 31, 1928, in Los Angeles. He was 93 years old at the time of his death. He was a high school football and hurdles champion before playing for Compton Junior College in the Los Angeles region for one season.

As a brilliant all-around performer for Compton Junior College in 1948, McElhenny first gained fame. He later changed schools and enrolled at the University of Washington, where he played football for the Washington Huskies and was twice named an All-Pacific Coast Conference fullback. With the ninth overall pick in the 1952 NFL Draft, the 49ers selected him, and with to his flexibility, he became an instant star in the league, garnering five first-team All-Pro titles in his first six seasons. He was chosen for five Pro Bowls while playing for the 49ers, and he made a sixth Pro Bowl appearance while playing for the Vikings. After brief appearances with the Giants and Lions, he ended his career.
