During the 2017 AFLW season, Heather Anderson, who was also an army medic, played for Adelaide and was a member of the group that defeated Brisbane in the championship game.
The Crows described Anderson’s death as “unexpected” in a brief tweet.
AFLW boss Nicole Livingstone also expressed her “deepest compassion to Heather’s family, friends, and colleagues”.
“Words cannot express the deep sadness amongst the AFL and AFLW community at this time. Our sincerest condolences are to the Anderson family,” Livingstone said.
For her unusual pink helmet, which Anderson claimed she wore so her blind mother could recognize her on the field, Anderson was well-known among AFLW ranks.
Her potential AFLW career was wrecked by injury, and before the 2018 season, the Crows delisted her due to a string of shoulder issues.
The first player selected from the Northern Territory, Anderson was taken with the tenth overall pick in the inaugural AFLW draft in 2016.

When she was 15 years old and playing for the ACT Under 18 Youth Girls team against NSW in Woolongong in the middle of 2009, Anderson received her first representative honor. In the 2016 AFL Women’s draft, Adelaide selected Heather Anderson as the second overall pick and tenth overall pick. In the first round of the 2017 season, she made her debut in the 36-point victory over Greater Western Sydney at Thebarton Oval. She was a member of Adelaide’s championship team after the club defeated Brisbane by six points in the AFL Women’s Grand Final at Metricon Stadium.

She dislocated her right shoulder during the championship match, necessitating her second operation on the same shoulder in a year. She completed her first season with eight matches after playing every match.
The club declared in May that she had been delisted from the 2018 campaign due to a shoulder issue. Before the draft, Anderson underwent surgery in April 2017 and finished his recovery. She declared her permanent retirement from the AFL after being passed over for the draft.
