A much-loved member of the Norfolk speedway family and a popular rider with clubs across the country has died at the age of 51. Family and friends are mourning the passing of Gavin Hedge, the son of Pam and Trevor Hedge of Bawburgh, near Norwich, following a nine-month fight with illness.

Gavin accepted the advice of his doctor not to ride again, but just to show to himself that he could still do it, he got back on his bike and performed several practice laps.

Tony said,

“He was both delighted and proud to see Kenzie develop into a top grass track rider winning countless championships,”.

His funeral will take place at 12 noon on Wednesday, November 16 at Breckland Crematorium in Norwich Road, Scoulton, NR9 4NR, and afterward at Bawburgh Golf Club. The annual Norwich Speedway lunch organized by Pam Hedge has been canceled this year. It had been due to take place at Bawburgh Golf Club on Sunday, November 20.

Speedway Career

Gavin Hedge followed in the footsteps of his father, a world-class former Norwich and Wimbledon rider, who started a speedway career when he was in his mid-20s. Tony Hurren, aka Hawkeye, a speedway journalist and a friend of the family, tells me that in 1995, when he first tried his luck at Swindon in an SC, he was an immediate sensation and took first place with a maximum score of 15 points.

The next year, Gavin made his team debut with the Peterborough Thundercats in the Conference League of the speedway, playing in all 13 games. The fans adored him because he rode with style and action. He competed for the Isle of Wight, Oxford, and Skegness teams. He joined Mildenhall in the latter part of 1997, and by the time the season was up, he had a stellar nine-point average.

Additionally, he rode for Wimbledon’s father’s squad as well as Area-Essex, Glasgow, and Reading. With his racing days behind him, Gavin joined his father’s company, Trevor Hedge Racing, in Norfolk, where he developed his own distinct division and was responsible for tuning and maintaining the company’s road, motor cross, and grass track bikes.
