According to Fox 13 in Memphis, Lola Mitchell, better known as the groundbreaking Southern female rapper Gangsta Boo and a member of the Three 6 Mafia, has passed away at the age of 43. Her rep confirmed the rapper’s passing to WREG 3 Memphis. Fox 13 reports that she was discovered deceased on Sunday afternoon. The cause of death hasn’t been made public.
A picture of Mitchell was posted on social media on Sunday in what appears to be a homage by DJ Paul, who co-founded Three 6 Mafia with Juicy J.
“Man we was jus together three weeks ago,” Lil Jon wrote in response to DJ Paul’s Instagram post. “Rest well quenn.”
The rapper, who was born in Memphis, joined the group as the second female rapper and started rapping as a teenager. From 2001’s Choices: The Album to their first studio album, Mystic Stylez, she made appearances. She began establishing a solo career in the late 1990s with the release of 1998’s Enquiring Minds, which peaked at number 46 on the Billboard 200 and gave rise to her popular song “Where Dem Dollas At?”
Both Worlds *69, her sophomore attempt, reached Number 29. Enquiring Minds II: The Soap Opera, Gangsta Boo’s third album, was released in 2003.
She appeared on countless other artists’ tracks over the course of over three decades, which is evidence of her influence. She collaborated with Latto and GloRilla in December to release the song “F*ck the Club Up,” which is a parody of Three 6 Mafia’s “Tear Da Club Up.” In 2020’s RTJ4, she also made an appearance on Run the Jewels’ “Walking in the Snow.”
