The death of French journalist Frédéric Leclerc-Imhoff while covering the crisis in Ukraine has gravely upset the Committee to Protect Journalists, according to CPJ Executive Director Robert Mahoney.

According to BFMTV and Serhiy Gaidai, the regional governor of the Luhansk region, Leclerc-Imhoff was murdered on Monday, May 30, after an armored evacuation truck came under “enemy fire” as Russian troops penetrated the outskirts of the Ukrainian city of Sievierodonetsk. Leclerc-Imhoff was killed “while carrying out his duty to inform,” according to France’s foreign minister, Catherine Colonna.

“The Committee to Protect Journalists is deeply saddened by the death of Frédéric Leclerc-Imhoff and calls on Russian and Ukrainian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his death,” said Mahoney. “His killing is yet another example of the hideous toll taken on non-combatants by Russia’s war on Ukraine. Journalists are civilians who show particular courage by reporting from war zones and should never be targeted for their work.”

According to a statement released by BFMTV, Leclerc-colleague Imhoff’s Maxime Brandstaetter was mildly injured during the strike, while their “fixer” Oksana Leuta remained unharmed.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Leclerc-Imhoff is at least the seventh journalist to be slain while reporting on the conflict. At least seven people died while covering the fighting, according to CPJ, and another seven are being investigated for work-related deaths.
