They were Carmelite missionaries who embarked on a journey, moving their family from Ireland to various locations, including Canada and Boston, before finally settling in Calexico, California, situated in the Imperial Valley.

Donal served as California’s representative and the first non-citizen to be chosen as Boys Nation president in 1983, while he was a senior in high school. The 37th session of the American Legion Boys Nation was held at that time. Later, he attended Harvard University to pursue a degree in history, graduating in 1988.
