Reports: Settlement Reached in Dennis Hastert Hush Money Lawsuit Days Before Trial

A settlement in the civil action against disgraced former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert was reached on Wednesday, putting the years-long hush-money case to a close just days before it was slated to go to trial.

Judge Robert Pilmer, the chief judge of Illinois’ 23rd Judicial Circuit, which includes Kendall County, where the lawsuit was filed, announced Wednesday afternoon that the parties had reached a tentative settlement agreement after attorneys for both sides met for more than an hour ahead of a scheduled court hearing.

After the settlement was announced, the plaintiff’s attorney Kristi Browne stated,

“We’ve struck an agreement in principle, the specifics of the deal remain private,” adding, “It’s just up to us working out a written settlement agreement.”

“I can assure you that all of the parties’ claims have been settled, and will be resolved, subject to the signature of the settlement agreement,”

she added.

John Ellis, Hastert’s lawyer, declined to comment.

“I would have delighted to try this case, I think it was a wonderful case.” “I’ve been extremely confident in our case from the start,” she says, “but this is what we’ve managed to settle, and this is a conclusion that my client is satisfied with.”

Browne remarked,

The settlement occurred less than a week after a judge decided that the plaintiff, known only as James Doe in court documents, would be recognized for the first time in court once the trial began. The jury selection process was set to begin on September 20.

Hastert, 79, spent about 85% of a 15-month jail term he received in 2016 after pleading guilty to one felony count of structuring, which involves hiding banking activities by withdrawing significant quantities of cash in tiny denominations to evade federal reporting requirements.

Further Information

Hastert allegedly breached federal banking laws by concealing $1.7 million in withdrawals to pay hush money to a former student he s*xually assaulted in the 1970s while working as a teacher and wrestling coach at Yorkville High School before joining politics, according to prosecutors.

In 2016, the person sued Hastert for breach of contract, demanding the unpaid remainder of the $3.5 million in hush money, which amounts to roughly $1.8 million.

Because the statute of limitations in Illinois had already elapsed – within three years of the occurrence or three years after an underage victim turns 18 – Hastert was not prosecuted in connection with any of the claims of s*xual assault.

When asked if the judge’s decision to name Doe had an influence on settlement talks, Browne said she couldn’t say since she couldn’t reveal contacts with her client. However, she subsequently admitted that the settlement surprised her “a little bit.”

“Anything can happen at any time, cases may settle,” she added, “but I was very convinced this one was going to trial as of a couple of weeks ago.”
