A BRITISH DAD is facing prison in World Cup host country Qatar after failing to make loan repayments.

When working there, Brian Glendinning became unwell and left the country before paying off his loan. In 2018, the 43-year-old construction engineer borrowed £20,000 from Qatar National Bank. When he returned home, his employment was terminated; but, this year, he was able to secure a new position at an Iraqi BP oil refinery.

On September 12, he discovered that an Interpol notice had been issued and that he had been detained at the airport when he landed in Baghdad. The family from Kincardine, Fife, is concerned that the father of three who is currently detained in a jail in the capital of Iraq may be deported to Qatar, where he might be sentenced to up to two years in prison.

“Brian fears being jailed in Qatar during the World Cup – while Brits come there to watch football and celebrities continue to promote this nation,” said Radha Stirling of Ipex, a campaign group for extradition reform. As a debt collection strategy, it appears that the bank has called in the full loan and activated a “wrongful” Interpol notice.

“How could they extradite him for a little bank debt?” said his brother John. Brian was making payments and had spoken with the bank. “ He traveled to Iraq to work so he could pay his expenses, support his family, and travel. Qatar appears to believe that throwing him in jail is preferable to allowing him to work off his debt.
