The couple’s first child, Grif Leone, was born on May 3, 2016, shortly after their engagement in October 2015. At a tender age, Grif eats better than most adults savoring dishes ranging from lamb shanks to delicate salmon belly.

If we’re having lamb shanks with some rice and salad, I’ll chop it all up super fine, so it’s almost a paste, and he eats it right up. Salmon belly. Shrimp. Venison. Chicken stock. Everything.

He starts his culinary school when he was 26 years old

People sometimes assume that because of his enormous YouTube following, he was nurtured as a chef from an early age, but this is not the truth. He didn’t start culinary school until he was 26 years old. His job life had been all over the place before that. He’s worked as a glazier, a carpenter, a caterer, and a restaurant chef, among other things. 

When Brad was 26, he went to Brooklyn and enrolled in the Institute of Culinary Education. He was hired as an intern at Bon Appetit after graduation. Brad became one of Bon Appetit’s most useful employees. He was the test kitchen manager a few years later, in charge of obtaining all of the materials and culinary equipment. He was also in charge of the kitchen budget and coordination. 

In 2016, as part of Bon Appétit’s push to boost its YouTube presence, creative director Alex Grossman came up with the idea for a web series following Leone in the magazine’s test kitchen. The first film, which accompanied Leone while she made kombucha, was shot and then put on hold for eight months until camera operator Vincent Cross persuaded the magazine to publish it. On October 21, 2016, the video that would later become the first episode of It’s Alive with Brad was released.

Leone changed professions at Bon Appétit in late 2018, leaving his role as Test Kitchen Manager to focus only on video production. It’s Alive: Goin’ Places, a spin-off series from It’s Alive, premiered on Bon Appétit’s dedicated streaming channel in 2019. Leone was nominated for his work on It’s Alive at the 11th Shorty Awards in the category “Best in Food” that same year.
