The opera, which was composed in 1968, received its world premiere in 2010 at the Bregenz Festival in Austria, and it has since been performed in other cities, including Warsaw, London, Madrid, Berlin, Chicago, and New York.

Posmysz was an Auschwitz prisoner from May 1942 to January 18, 1945, when she was sent to the Ravensbrück and Neustadt-Glewe concentration camps.
