American football quarterback Zachary Kapono Wilson aka Zach Wilson plays for the National Football League’s New York Jets. He was selected second overall by the Jets in the 2021 NFL Draft while playing college football for BYU, where he twice won the MVP award in a bowl game.
Zach Wilson, selected with the second overall pick only a year ago, won’t play today because Mike White will start and Joe Flacco will serve as his backup.
The Jets are now focused (finally) on their football game versus the Bears after a turbulent and challenging week. They had a lot to think about after a week in which they had to bench a player they had considered to be their franchise starter.
How did the second-year player take being benched?
“Zach handled it like a pro,” head coach Robert Saleh told NFL Network Insider Mike Garafolo late this week. “He challenged it as anyone would. But at the same time, he had a good week of practice.”
White, a knowledgeable former backup, practiced with the first team while Flacco worked with the backups. Wilson was left with scout-team opportunities, which Saleh thinks will be advantageous for him.
Nobody contests Wilson’s talent. Though they have opted to remain silent in public, the Jets do hope to have him return as the team’s starter.
Wilson had a terrible week. After the Patriots defeated him in Week 11, he claimed he had not let the defense down by scoring three points.
Wilson later apologized to the squad for his remarks and said he didn’t mean them the way they came across. According to several sources, Wilson broke down in tears as he apologized to his teammates for both his actions and his remarks.
There’s never been a problem with care. Those who know Wilson well say he is an extraordinarily hard worker who may grind too hard to the point where it becomes difficult to function. He had trouble with straightforward throws last season and battled the yips as a result.
New York athletes
In other words, he got to a mental place where he was thinking too much and digging in too much that the simple tosses were all but impossible. That continued into the spring (where he made progress), followed by a challenging season.
Other New York athletes, such as baseball players Chuck Knoblauch and Mackey Sasser, have been impacted by this reality. Sustaining drives proved challenging when Wilson missed the layups and struggled to make simple throws.
On anything, there was no consistency. The offense was ineffective. The Jets were eventually forced to insert White.
Wilson’s current priorities are clearing his head, honing his fundamentals, and just taking a step back. He might be able to continue from here, one hopes.
