Zabiullah Mujahid (Pashto: ; Abullh Mujahid; sometimes spelled Zabihullah or Dhabih Allah) is the Taliban’s official spokesperson. He is one of the group’s two official spokesmen, the other being Qari Yousef Ahmadi. Mujahid focuses on the Taliban’s actions in eastern, northern, and central Afghanistan, while Ahmadi discusses the western and southern parts of the country.

On August 17, 2021, Mujahid made his public debut. Prior to that, he used telephone conversations, text messages, emails, Twitter, and postings on Islamist websites to connect with journalists and speak on behalf of the Taliban. Mujahid was appointed in January 2007 after Taliban spokesman Muhammad Hanif was arrested.

Afghanistan: Mysterious Taliban spokesman finally shows his face

The Taliban’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid did the majority of the talking at their first news conference since capturing control of Afghanistan on Tuesday.

In the historic news conference, Mr. Mujahid received a wide range of questions from reporters, claiming that women’s rights would be maintained “within the context of Islamic law.”

Something else was notable for most of the journalists present: it was the first time they had seen his face. He’s been operating in the shadows for years, with merely a voice on the other end of the phone.

Yalda Hakim of the BBC says she was “startled” to see the face of a man she had been communicating with for more than a decade when he responded to the first question from a female journalist.

“We don’t want any internal or external adversaries,” the official said to another reporter, trying to strike a conciliatory tone.

Ms. Hakim, on the other hand, claims that this is a far cry from some of the texts she used to get from him.

“Some of the texts were blatantly Islamist. ‘This person is bloodthirsty for the Americans, he’s bloodthirsty for everyone in the Afghan government,’ you think of some of them. Then he sits there today and promises there will be no retaliation “she explains.

“He’s been making murderous statements for years, and now he’s suddenly peace-loving? It’s difficult to reconcile.”

Mr. Mujahid was actually seated in the seat once occupied by Dawa Khan Menapal, the director of Afghanistan’s media and information center, who was slain by Taliban terrorists earlier this month.

At the time, Mr. Mujahid claimed credit, claiming that Mr. Menapal was “killed in a special attack.”

Many other reporters, including veteran BBC journalist John Simpson, have tweeted about seeing Mr. Mujahid, describing him as “a reasonably moderate, friendly man.”

For years, though, there has been speculation that the faceless speaker is actually multiple people.

These chats took place long before social media, when reporters had to call him on a landline, according to Lyse Doucet, the BBC’s chief international correspondent. Some have speculated that the man in front of the cameras on Tuesday appeared to be too young to be the same person who had been answering questions for so many years.

“For years, many have speculated that it was a made-up name and that there were multiple “Zabihullahs” who took turns. Of course, we’re all agreeing that he is THE Zabihullah Mujahid at this point. Perhaps he isn’t?” Ms. Doucet explains.

According to Ms. Hakim, the mystery is all part of the Taliban’s game plan.

“The Taliban are like that; they’re well-organized and ideological, and nothing they do is by chance. You couldn’t write a better story to develop mystery around a single person, and then he emerges on screen out of nowhere “she explains.

Whether or not Mr Mujahid is a single person, Ms Hakim says she was dubious of his statements on Tuesday, despite his attempts to appear measured.

“The caveat was basically the sharia law, which gave me the goosebumps,” she recalls. “They haven’t even sketched out what that looks like yet.”

“The thing about the Taliban is that they’re deceiving, charming, and know how to use the appropriate words, but you’re never sure whether you should believe them or not,” she explains.

“There’s a lot of suspense… but do we truly know who they are?” says the narrator.
