Former Afghan President Ashraf Ghani was a Politician, Economist, and Academic who served as the fifth and final president of Afghanistan, under which the Taliban overthrew the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
In his role as Afghanistan’s president, Ghani was a Visionary known for his energetic and intense speeches aimed at making Afghanistan a Technocratic State, Inspiring a young generation of educated ladies and gentlemen to take leadership positions in the country. So, the whole world was shocked when this visionary president left his country in the hands of the Taliban in a difficult situation, and people around the globe wondered why he left his nation in the most difficult times.
Why did Ashraf Ghani Leave Afghanistan and where is he Now?
After half a year of Taliban leadership, Afghanistan has seen a significant transition. The country feels safer and is less violent than in previous decades, but the once-aid-driven economy is on the verge of collapse. Millions of people worldwide hold Ashraf Ghani, the former president of Afghanistan, responsible for the large-scale emigration or evacuation of the educated elite.
Then why did he leave his country when he said that “No force in the world could convince me to now board a plane and leave this country.” I will sacrifice my life in defense of the county I adore. However, he did board an aircraft and depart from his nation, and everyone is curious as to why.
Ashraf Ghani recently gave a CNN interview on August 15, 2022, more than a year after he left, and in it, he explained why he fled the nation he had vowed to die for. He explained that he boarded a plane since it was no longer feasible to defend it in plain language.
In defense of himself, he noted that he was the last to leave his nation during the presidential ground, that his minister of defense had already left as he was on his way to the ministry of defense when they informed him that Kabul could not be defended and that the entire presidential protection force had dispersed as they had dressed in civilian clothes.
Additionally, he turned away from the Taliban and their sympathizers because he did not want to give them the satisfaction of degrading an Afghan president once more by forcing them to ratify the legitimacy of the government.
He is not Afraid
He continued by saying that he is not worried because he was living amid the rockets that had been dropped nearby, but he did not move and that giving up and allowing himself to be humiliated was not an option.
As a result, he is currently receiving shelter in the United Arab Emirates. The UN took his name off the list of heads of state on February 15, 2022. In May 2022, a report on the fall of the Afghan National Army and the Afghan government was released by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction.
When he was questioned about the loyalty of his presidential guard, the president and advisor reportedly feared that their own guard would shoot them. In response, the former president told CNN that “a situation occurred during that time when he was in a meeting and some started firing and his own cook was offered hundreds of thousands of dollars to poison him so it is an environment that people need to understand.
He went on to say that leaving his country was a spur-of-the-moment choice because, as he took off in his helicopter, neither his passport nor any of his personal possessions were with him. He just had a pair of shoes and some clothing from Afghanistan when he fled his own country.
According to the SIGAR, Ghani is a “paranoid president who is terrified of his own compatriots” and that many of his firings of senior military officials “undermined morale” among the ANA. According to reports, Ghani thought the US was planning a coup against him. Ghani’s decision to leave undid a last-minute agreement the U.S. had made to keep the Taliban out of Kabul for at least two weeks. At the time, Ghani claimed that more Afghans would have died and there would have been “bloodshed” if he had stayed.
