Marvin Chomsky, American Director and an Emmy Award-winning director renowned for his work on historical dramas, including the blockbuster mini-series “Roots” and “Holocaust,” died on March 28 in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 92.

His son Eric confirmed the death, in hospice care in a retirement community.

While he was studying at Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, he began working in radio, and later on, for a television show aimed at teenagers.

Marvin Chomsky’s Career

Marvin Chomsky also served in the U.S. Army, before pursuing a career in film and television. Chomsky had directed many TV movies such as Brink’s: The Great Robbery, Victory at Entebbe, Attica, and Billionaire Boys Club which were related to the real-life story of a Los Angeles investing and social club that targeted young, inexperienced men from wealthy families.

He also directed many episodes of Roots, the sweeping story of a Black family’s struggles which was aired in 1977. With few opportunities for roles for Black actors, he helped to change racial attitudes in Hollywood.

He was nominated for eight Emmys during his career, “Peter the Great,” “Inside the Third Reich,” “Attica” and “Holocaust”.

Chomsky was the winner of four Emmy Awards: Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for Holocaust in 1978, Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries, Movie or Dramatic Special for Attica in 1980, and for Inside the Third Reich in 1982, and Outstanding Miniseries Peter the Great in 1986.
