James Fron “Sonny” Throckmorton aka Sonny Throckmorton is an American country music singer and songwriter who was born on April 2, 1941, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, United States. Sonny is mainly known primarily for his songwriting, he has more than 1,000 of his songs recorded by various country singers.
Throckmorton is 81 years old as of 2022 and he is also a member of the Nashville Songwriters‘ Hall of Fame. He has been awarded Songwriter of the Year by both Broadcast Music Incorporated and also the Nashville Songwriters Association.

Sonny Throckmorton was born in Carlsbad, although his family soon moved to Wichita Falls, Texas. After graduating from college, he moved to San Francisco, California and he first played rock and roll. After that, he switched his focus to country music at record producer Pete Drake’s suggestion.
By 1964, Sonny played bass guitar for Carl Butler and Pearl, and also had been signed to a publishing contract. As a songwriter, his first hit was “How Long Has It Been”, which was a Top Ten country hit for Bobby Lewis he was later signed to a contract with Sony/Tree Publishing but suddenly he was fired after none of his songs became hit.

His 1978 hit for Jerry Lee Lewis was “Middle Age Crazy,” which even became the basis of a major movie. Throckmorton was also named as Songwriter of the Year by the Nashville Songwriters Association for three years in a row starting between 1978 and 1980.
After that in 1976, Throckmorton tried recording his own songs, which were “first for Starcrest” and “then for Mercury”, but his biggest hit was, “Last Cheater’s Waltz,” which only reached the Top 50. His stature as a major songwriter flourished and in the year 1980, he was named as BMI Songwriter of the Year. After Seven Years, with many hits under his belt, Throckmorton was added to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. He also recorded Southern Train for Warner in 1988 and after that, he retired to his Texas farm to be with his family.
