He also served on the advisory board for the University of California’s toxic substances research and teaching program. DeSaulnier championed the Industrial Safety Ordinance and the Refinery Flare Rule for neighborhood chemical and refinery operations while he served on the Board of Supervisors. He was on the executive boards of the Bay Area Air Quality Management and the Association of Bay Area Governments.

DeSaulnier supported strict environmental restrictions while serving on the Air Resources Board. DeSaulnier established a Women’s Health Program at the county level to meet Contra Costa County’s medical needs.

DeSaulnier’s performance as county supervisor was criticized by the Contra Costa Times editorial board. DeSaulnier presided over the Select Committees on Growth Management and Air Quality as well as the Transportation Committee in the Assembly.

Additionally, he served on the Assembly’s Appropriations, Human Services, Rules, and Labor and Employment committees. DeSaulnier, one of three candidates in the primary election on June 7, 2022, declared his intention to run for reelection in the 10th congressional district.
