Leah Marlene, a 21-year-old singer from Illinois,  was competing for the top prize of American Idol 2022 with Katy Perry’s song “Fireworks.”

Local musician Leah Marlene was sent off ‘American Idol’ in the first round of the Season 20 finale. The hard trip to the final episode for the Town of Normal native has received considerable support both locally and globally.

As she has sung with the school choir and met with former teachers, the walls were festooned with festive yellow decorations. She then paid a visit to her family, joining them for dinner before her performance downtown later that evening.

“I couldn’t be more proud of you.” said her dad Derry Grehan. “You’re the most wonderful daughter any father could want.”

The montage ended with her arriving downtown in a private escort and performing in front of hundreds of people.

“It has been the most beautiful experience of my entire life,” Marlene told the crowd, expressing her shock as she took in the multitudes in attendance.

Following the montage, Marlene sang her own song, “Flowers,” for the judges. The song was written to her past self, according to host Ryan Seacrest, and the message of resilience is communicated in the song’s lyrics. Marlene was lauded by the judges for her performance and improvement during her time on the show, during which she began to cry.

I’m just so overwhelmed, so overwhelmed,’ said Marlene in response to Seacrest asking how she felt. “I would never believe you two years ago if you said I was here, I never thought I was going to get out of that situation. And now I’m up here singing this song (to) people in that situation.”

“You have every right to feel these emotions right now,” said judge Luke Bryan.
