Reuters, UVALDE, Texas, May 24 – After rushing into a Texas elementary school on Tuesday, a teen gunman slaughtered at least 19 children and two teachers, the latest in a string of gun-related mass killings in the United States and the country’s bloodiest school shooting in almost a decade.

Authorities say the mayhem began when the 18-year-old suspect, Salvador Ramos, shot his own grandmother, who survived.

He drove away from the scene and crashed near the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, about 80 miles (130 kilometers) west of San Antonio. There, he went on a deadly rampage that ended when he was shot and killed by police.

The reason for this was not immediately apparent.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Sergeant Erick Estrada, law enforcement authorities spotted the gunman emerge from the smashed vehicle with a weapon and “engaged” the suspect, who nevertheless managed to charge into the building and open fire.

A clearly distraught US President Joe Biden spoke from the White House hours later, urging Americans to stand up to the politically powerful US gun industry, which he blamed for stalling the implementation of tougher weapons safety rules.

“As a country, we must ask ourselves, ‘When in God’s name will we stand up to the gun lobby?'” On national television, Biden suggested that the United States reinstate a ban on assault-style weapons and other “common-sense gun restrictions.”
