Werner Reich was a Holocaust Survivor and a magician who was the founding member of the Long Island Multi-faith Forum and a member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Psychic Entertainers Association.

What caused the death of Werner Reich?

On July 8, Werner Reich, 94, passed away at his home in Smithtown, New York, on Long Island. His son confirmed and announced his death. After immigrating to the United States, he became an engineer, but he never lost his love for magic.

He still performed close-up magic feats with cards and coins for small groups of fellow magicians, at temples, and at the birthday celebrations of his sons.

His cause of death was not disclosed, despite popular belief that he passed away naturally from old age.

Werner Reich was born on October 1st, 1927 In Berlin. His mother, Elly Reich, received the Iron Cross for her service as a nurse for Germany on the Eastern Front during World War I. She gave birth to him. When the Nazis came to power, his father Wilhelm Reich was compelled to resign from his position as an engineer because he was Jewish.

Sadly, when they went to Yugoslavia, his father passed away. Werner’s mother sent him and his sister Renate into hiding with various families when the Nazis attacked. Before being detained by Gestapo officers, Werner spent nearly two years living with a couple who were active in the resistance organization.

He held an engineering position with Hills Supermarkets and Nabisco. When the Nazis took over Berlin in 1933, Werner Reich and his family lived there. They later escaped to Zagreb. Werner was hidden by a couple who were active in the resistance organization when the Nazis invaded Yugoslavia. Reich was one of 89 people chosen from 6,000 applicants and assigned to work in Auschwitz I.

After a seven-day death march, he arrived at the Austrian concentration camp of Mauthausen in January 1945. He returned to Yugoslavia following liberation in May 1945 before eventually making his way to England, where he worked as a laborer before going on to become a tool and die, maternal law firm Borden Ladner Gervais and served on the CFL Board of Governors in 2011.
