Zimmerman, a Lawrenceville, Georgia, native, played for the Furman Paladins for two seasons in college before agreeing to a Generation Adidas contract with Major League Soccer. He was then chosen by FC Dallas as the 7th overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft.
After initially having trouble getting playing time because of injuries, Zimmerman became a regular starter in 2016. He made 38 starts as FC Dallas won the Supporters’ Shield and the U.S. Open Cup to complete the hat trick. After being traded to Los Angeles FC, an expansion team, in December 2017, Zimmerman helped the team win the Supporters’ Shield in 2019.
