Gibson Gathu Mbugua, who played the lead role in Vioja Mahakamani, passed away on December 22 early in the morning after battling illness for 20 years.
The actor who portrayed a prosecutor on Vioja Mahakamani died while being treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit, according to Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), which sponsored the popular local program.
Gathu underwent surgery in August after battling diabetes for around 20 years.
Uhuru provided Gathu with Ksh2 million on June 13 in order for him to receive a kidney transplant. During the charity function held at Nairobi’s Charter Hall, he sent his donation.
Gathu confirmed the donation and referred to Uhuru as a personal friend.
“President Kenyatta, who is a good friend, did send his personal donation of Ksh2 million. We as a family and the committee thank him for the support,” the reknown Vioja Mahakamani actor stated.
Gathu acknowledged that his condition had quickly improved following the transplant at Eldoret’s Mediheal Hospital.
“I have been in the hospital since July 18, 2022, and I was discharged on August 3, 2022. I feel so good.
I am full of energy. I think dialysis had taken a toll on me. Now I am slowly going back to my usual self. God is so good,” he announced.
Following the news of his passing, Kenyans came together to honor his life while also grieving his premature passing.
“You mean this was the last photo,!! where will I get a friend like you, who was more than a brother to me, who will encourage me that I can act? I’m in tears Gibson Gathu Mbugua why now ?” his close friend Angel Wayne Ng’endo mourned sharing the last photo they took together.
Anne Wamuratha, a spokeswoman for women in Kiambu County, was unable to conceal her sorrow after hearing the tragic news;
“It is with great regret that we receive the sand news of the passing of our legendary actor in Vioja Mahakamani amongst other TV programs Prosecutor Gibson Gathu Mbugua.
He will be greatly remembered for his prowess in the role of a prosecutor in Vioja mahakamani and Mama Kayai in the role he played alongside Mzee Onjwang,” read part of her message.
