Joyce, a former RTÉ broadcaster who hosted a variety of well-liked radio shows over the course of a lengthy career with the channel, has passed away.

Last night, Mr. Joyce passed away at Fern Dean in Blackrock, Dublin, surrounded by numerous family members.

He is survived by his children Kenn, Sally, Alan, Karen, and Julie as well as other family members and friends. His wife Vera passed away almost six years ago.

He was a Dublin native who worked as an accountant for the Irish Hospital Sweepstakes before starting his radio career in the 1950s when several sponsored programs started airing on Radio Éireann.

The Irish Hospital Sweepstakes claimed one of the sponsored timeslots, and Val Joyce was selected to host the programs.

His other shows throughout the years included Sound of Light and Pop Call, but he is probably best known for Airs and Races, a Saturday afternoon program that included music and sporting events like horse racing in the 1980s.

Ireland’s Choice, starring Val Joyce, followed later, and Late Date followed that for nearly 15 years.

Terry Wogan was a staff member of his program early in his career, and over the years, he collaborated with many other renowned broadcasters.

His wife Vera was one of the singers that participated in the New Year’s Eve 1961 broadcast on RTÉ television from the Gresham Hotel.

In the 1950s, Val Joyce began working in radio, hosting sponsored shows including the Irish Hospitals Sweepstakes program. When television was introduced in 1961, he created a lucrative side business by voicing advertising. In the 1960s, he began the Pop Call program on Radio 1 and hosted Sound of the Light, broadcasts by the Radio Éireann Light Orchestra.

He used to ride his bicycle to work in O’Connell St, where RTÉ’s studios were located on the top floor of the GPO, carrying his long-play records in baskets. He still rides the same bicycle today.
