He was a standout schoolboy performer who was selected by the Queensland Reds for the inaugural season of the Super 12 in 1996, at the age of 21. At the age of 23, he made his international test debut against South Africa on August 23, 1997, during the Tri-Nations Series. Almost a year later, on his second cap, he made his first start.
In Australia’s record 76–0 win over England in 1998, he took over the position of number 8 from fellow Tongan Willie Ofahengaue. After assisting Australia in qualifying for the 1999 Rugby World Cup in September 1998, he was instrumental in Australia’s second Webb Ellis Cup victory. He appeared in four of their games, scoring against Romania in the opener and playing the entire 80 minutes in the championship game.
In 2000, he helped Australia win their first-ever Tri-Nations title, which coincided with the Wallabies winning their third consecutive Bledisloe Cup trophy, a first for the team. He played in all three tests for Australia against the British and Irish Lions in 2001, helping them win their first series in over 70 years. Later that year, he scored the winning try in the Bledisloe Cup final against the All Blacks, giving his skipper, John Eales, a fitting send-off in his final game for the Wallabies.
Kefu left the Queensland Reds after failing to make the 2003 Rugby World Cup squad, signing with Kubota Spears in Japan’s Top League, after garnering 103 caps for his country. Kubota Spears struggled to progress from the middle of the table during Kefu’s six seasons with the Japanese club, barely reaching fifth place in the 2009–10 Top League season. Kefu announced his retirement from rugby after the 2009–10 season.
Coaching Career
Kefu became the head coach of the Sunshine Coast Stingrays, a Queensland Premier League team, in 2010. He guided the Stingrays to the Senior Championship title in his debut season in command, defeating Gold Coast 37–12 in the final. Kefu stayed on as coach of the Stingrays until 2011 when he briefly moved to work as an assistant coach for the Tongan national team in preparation for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Tonga finished second in the 2011 IRB Pacific Nations Cup, their highest finish since the event began in 2006. Tonga defeated Fiji for the first time since 2008, winning 45–21, their highest margin of victory over the Flying Fijians.
Furthermore, they defeated Samoa 29–19, their first victory over Manu Samoa since 2007. Their lone defeat occurred at the hands of Japan, with a score of 28–27. Tonga won two games at the World Cup, defeating Japan 31–18 and France 19–14 for the first time since 1999. The two victories, however, were insufficient to advance Tonga further in the tournament.
Following the dismissal of Tongan head coach Isitolo Maka in 2012, Kefu served as temporary head coach for the 2012 IRB Pacific Nations Cup. He led Tonga to a lone victory in Tokyo, defeating Japan 24–20. Mana Otai was named full coach in September 2012.
As a Head Coach
Kefu became the head coach of his previous club, Kubota Spears, in Japan after leaving the Tongan national team. The team had been relegated to the Eastern A-League. He had brought in young Japanese players and recruited high-profile players like Kurt Morath and Hoani Matenga. Kefu guided the team to promotion to the Top League for the 2013–14 season, and in his second year in command, he led them to the top of Group 2, but they were unable to go through the Wildcard play-offs, losing 47–10 to NEC Green Rockets.

Kubota Spears finished fifth in their group in the 2014–15 Top League season, forcing them to compete in the Promotion and Relegation Play-offs. Kefu left the club at the end of the 2015/16 season after yet another disappointing season.
