Tony Brooks’s Career, What was his profession?

In the 1957 British Grand Prix at Aintree, Brooks and Stirling Moss shared the first victory for a British-built car in a World Championship race. Brooks, like Moss, is regarded as one of the best drivers never to win a World Championship, and both Moss and three-time World Champion Jack Brabham were known to admire his abilities. Due to Mike Hawthorn’s retirement (and later death in a road accident) and Peter Collins’ death the previous season, Brooks, Brabham, and Moss had a chance to win the championship in 1959.

Brooks got off to a good start, finishing second to Brabham in Monaco. He did not finish the Dutch Grand Prix, but he won the French Grand Prix in Reims with ease. Tony won the sole German Grand Prix hosted at AVUS after failing to finish in a Vanwall at the British Grand Prix, which he drove due to a strike by Ferrari workers in Italy. He won both heats of the event, which was unusually split into two. In Portugal, he qualified 10th and finished fifth, five laps behind. He retired from the race at Monza shortly after the start, but he was still in contention for the title.

He was struck by German teammate Wolfgang von Trips at the first-ever United States Grand Prix for Formula One at Sebring and pitted to check for damage, losing two minutes. It turned out to be a waste of time, but he still came in third. With 27 points, he came in second in the championship, seven points behind Brabham and one-and-a-half ahead of Moss. Brooks won six races for Vanwall and Ferrari, gaining four pole positions, ten podiums, and 75 championship points in the process. He was a driver for BRM till the end of 1961, right before the team’s most successful season. He finished third in the first-ever United States Grand Prix at Watkins Glen to round out his career.

Nurburgring

He was also a successful sportscar driver, winning the 1957 1000 km Nürburgring and the 1958 RAC Tourist Trophy in an Aston Martin DBR1 with co-driver Moss. In 1957, he had less success at Le Mans, due to another accident while driving an Aston Martin DBR1 in that year’s 24-hour race, which caused him to rethink his racing strategy. Brooks, a devout Catholic, pledged he would never endanger his life in a car that was not in good working order after a collision in the 1956 British Grand Prix and a subsequent Le Mans crash both occurred in cars with technical flaws he was aware of. “I was lucky in the Le Man’s shunt in that I didn’t break anything, but I did get really terrible abrasions – there was a hole in the side of my thigh that I could virtually put my hand into,” he said of his own condition.

With these injuries, he went on to win the 1957 British Grand Prix alongside Moss. Brooks was honored by his hometown in 2007. A banquet was thrown in his honor by the Dukinfield District Assembly, which is part of Tameside Council, and a plaque was dedicated outside his former home on Park Lane.
